Arttu visited Czech Republic and beautiful town of Dolní Ùjezd. He spent there over a year(!), but now he has returned to Finland and is ready to explore other corners of the world. Arttu has visited many countries, read more!

Arttu in Czech Republic

Arttu´s diary and pictures:

Arttu arrived to our school in the middle of April 2012. It was the best time for him to enjoy the beautiful spring nature all around our village. Everybody could welcome him personally during their lessons of English language. The ”hosting class” of 9th grade girls could enjoy the real Finnish candies we’ve found in Arttu’s travel box. Then we enjoyed watching Arttu’s travel photos from the places we’d never been ourselves and we took some inspiration. The English teacher, Mrs. Zlata Hrubá, had to keep a special calendar where we booked Arttu’s accommodation in our houses.  He was so wanted that there were a few arguments occuring about who was going to have Arttu for the day & night! The girls from the class 4 have many doll’s beds, so Arttu was treated like a king every day and he could also meet a lot of his plush colleagues in various households. Could be, some of them might later also start discovering the world on their own?

Arttu & Czech Spring Traditions

The last day of April (actually the last evening) is dedicated to the ”Burning of the Withces”. There are fires everywhere, witches made of old clothes & boomsticks are burnt on top of them, there’s a lot of beer to drink (of course), and chatting and singing. Arttu had to hide a little, not to be sent to bed! The next day, 1st of May, Arttu was kissed (by the teacher herself) under the blooming cherry tree! This will grant him health and strenght in the whole year.

Building the May Pole was another event of the day, but alas! No photos of Arttu were taken there, everyone was too busy participating – and we forgot the camera at home. However, who wants to see how we celebrated this event, he can go to kaceni maje dolni ujezd 2012. That’s a real Czech village life with the great music of the band Cechomor, that’s very liked and famous here. Some of its members come from our region. We wanted to take photo of Arttu & the May Pole next day but the Pole was gone! Some boys from the neighour village (who knows?) cut it down and stole it! This is such a shame for the village that we shouldn’t mention it further.  Next year, our young men must be more careful and watch the Pole more properly…

Arttu at UNESCO site

The first place worth showing to Arttu was clear – the town of Litomyšl is just 10km away from Dolní Újezd and its castle is listed in the UNESCO world heritage. The Chezh famous composer Bedřich Smetana was born there and many other famous Czechs had their lives somehow connected to Litomysl, too. Arttu definitely liked the place and so he visited it more times dring his stay here.

Arttu’s other journeys

On weekend, Arttu went to see the beautiful surroundings  of Dolní Ùjezd. The natural protected area of Toulovcovy maštale, form where he could not only see the countryside better, but only watch the harvest going on under there. Next weekend Arttu spent in Horní Újezd with the local junior football team. The teams from this cillage use a unique playground for their home matches: the seats for fans are situated on the left side and the playground itself on the right side of a regular road for cars. It can then easily happen that if you pass by at the night (or wrong?) time, the fans won’t be able to see the just-scored goal because of your car!

Visit at the art school

The most distant place Arttu visited in the Czech Republic was Prague. He went there with Miriam, a 4th grader. Unfortunately again, the pictures from her mobile gadget showed small and few. Prague is definitely a place to see again.

And then came the time to say goodbye: The end of the school year approached and our building (400 years old) was getting ready for the greatest renovation of many years. But not only the brave bear was preparing to leave. His hosting 9th class was about to quit our school, too. They took Arttu to the local church park, played with him on the grass, and gave him many kisses. Sweet days of careless childhood were shortening for them. All the children were looking forward to their holidays and so were the teachers. Arttu was packing up his box and catching the first summer sun rays.

What´s up

Arttu didn’t know that he’ll have to spend more time here, as the host teacher was taken to hospital. So, here he comes home, after a long time in a foreign country, which, hopefully, won’t be strange and unfriendly to him. Take care, our soft friend, send our regards to everybody there on the north, and tell them they’ll be welcome here, too! Good luck with your future adventures, we’ll be watching your ways and keeping our fingers for you! Thanks for all the inspiration!
